Coated abrasives are flexible sheet based abrasives consisting of a backing sheet, a binder, and abrasive grain. They typically include abrasive belts, discs, and sheets, used mainly for polishing or finishing operations. SQH® offers a range of liquid resins to coat a variety of backing materials and grains. Both solvent and water borne systems are available.
Resins In low grade coated abrasives, animal glue is used as the maker coat, but synthetic resins are required where water and heat resistance is required. Although several resin types are used, such as, urea formaldehyde, and epoxy, phenolic resin provides the highest heat and water resistance. Maker coat resins are normally water based, whilst the size coat can be aqueous or solvent borne. Solvent based resins offer the highest performance but special flame proof plant is required. One problem with phenolic resin is their comparative brittleness. Modified phenolic resins, and mixtures of polymers are used for very flexible abrasives. However, modified resins do tend to exhibit reduced heat resistance. Special high water tolerance phenolic resins grades are available with improved compatibility with water borne polymers such as PVA.
